PRLog (Press Release) – Feb 10, 2012 –
Everybody knows Woody Harrelson. We know him as a basketball player in White Men Can’t Jump, a bowling player in Kingpin, a serial killer in Natural Born Killer, a contract killer in No Country for Old Men, a “hero” in Defendor or a survivor in Zombieland. In fact he played almost every role there is to play. But as of today, we will know if he can play a dirty cop because today is the release date of Rampart.
In Rampart, Harrelson plays Dave Brown a dirty LAPD veteran who is forced to face up the consequences of his perverse career. The action takes place in the 1990s during the fallout of the Rampart scandal, which was a widespread corruption scandal in the anti-gang unit of the Los Angeles Police Department. More then 70 police officers were convicted with various offenses such as unprovoked shootings, beatings, planting of evidence, framing of suspects, stealing and dealing narcotics, bank robbery, perjury and covering up evidence of these misconducts.
The movie will also measure the solvability of fairly new distributor Millennium Entertainment. It is a company owned by Israeli mogul Avi Lerner. He bought Millennium Entertainment, formally First Look Studios, in 2007 and has recently changed the company’s strategy. Previously, it was associated with movies targeted for videos on demand (VOD), like Trust or Trespass. They are now steering towards critically lauded movies like Rampart. In fact, with Millennium Entertainment; Lerner seeks and artsy vibe. Executive VP marketing Brooke Ford said that they would make movies “cast-driven, that will be resonant for critics.” She said: “Truthfully, there’s no room in the market for that direct-to-video fare. The rental business has shifted so dramatically.”
The company is looking to change their strategy and indeed have chosen a great movie to start with. Rampart was premiered at the Toronto film Festival in September 2011 and was very well received. It was written by James Elroy who wrote L.A. Confidential and it is directed by Oren Moverman. He as directed Academy Award nominee The Messenger staring Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster both staring in Rampart.
It is a “must see” for people who love cops movies. We have yet to see a cop as dirty as Dave Brown, and Woody Harrelson plays him just right. So if you have nothing to do this weekend, go to the nearest cinema to watch Rampart.
