Outgoing Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh has arrived in the United States for medical treatment.

The U.S. State Department would only say that Saleh had arrived but not where.

Saleh was wounded in an apparent assassination attempt last June.

His country, Yemen, was caught up in the Arab Spring, with protests last year calling for Saleh to step down after 33 years in power.

After months of unrest, Saleh agreed in November to quit under a deal to avoid prosecution for killing demonstrators.

The United States has defended its decision to issue Saleh a visa, despite criticism that it would be seen as sheltering him.

Yemen holds elections next month to pick a successor to Saleh.
