Former U.S. Senator Rick Santorum has won the contests in the states of Colorado, Minnesota, and Missouri in the race to become the Republican Party’s nominee to face President Barack Obama in the November U.S. election.
Santorum’s victories on February 7 are seen as inflicting damage to the campaign of front-runner Mitt Romney, who before this week had been victorious in the states of Nevada, Florida, and New Hampshire.
Santorum is a former U.S. senator from the state of Pennsylvania known for his socially conservative views.
His only previous victory in the nominating race had been a narrow win in Iowa in January.
In the state contests, the candidates secure the support of delegates who will formally choose the Republican nominee at the party’s convention in August.
