Former South Ossetian presidential candidate Alla Dzhioyeva has been described as being in a “serious but stable” condition after being taken to a hospital on February 9.

The Tskhinvali hospital where Dzhioyeva is being treated said she suffered a “hypertensive crisis” but reports vary on what led to her being hospitalized.

A spokesperson for Dzhioyeva, Fatima Kokoyeva, said she lost consciousness after security forces assaulted her campaign staff and hit Dzhioyeva in the head.

South Ossetia’s Interior Ministry denies any force was used against Dzhioyeva or her campaign staff.

There are conflicting reports that she is being sent to a Moscow hospital and reports that doctors from Moscow are coming to South Ossetia to treat her.

Dzhioyeva was the apparent victor in the second round of South Ossetia’s presidential election in November but the results were overturned.

Dzhioyeva, who believes she is the legitimate winner of the election, had planned to hold her own presidential inauguration on February 10.
