A Kyrgyz official says Kazakhstan’s Qulan mining complex has agreed to accept back hundreds of tons of radioactive coal it sold to Kyrgyzstan and to cover all expenses for the transportation of the coal.
The head of the Krygyz Power Stations Joint Stock Company, Aman Tentiev, who is currently visiting the Kazakh capital, Astana, told RFE/RL that Kyrgyz and Kazakh officials reached the agreement and are discussing ways to implement the plan.
Kyrgyz authorities launched investigations into the case after the tainted coal was delivered to Kyrgyzstan last September and arrested several local officials this month over distribution of the coal to schools in Kyrgyzstan’s northern Chui region.
Some opposition politicians have accused President Almazbek Atambaev and Prime Minister Omurbek Babanov of holding some responsibility in the affair.
