Gulf Arab states have decided to withdraw from the Arab League observer mission in Syria.

The announcement by the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members on January 24 came after Damascus rejected an Arab League plan to end 10 months of violence in the country.

The plan had called for President Bashar al-Assad to hand over power to a deputy.

Saudi Arabia, the largest GCC member, already on January 22 announced it was pulling out of the observer mission, saying the Syrian government has not respected any of the Arab League peace initiatives.

The United Nations estimates more than 5,000 people have been killed since protests against Assad’s regime began in March.

The other five GCC members are Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and the United Arab Emirates.
