Police have detained five prison guards who were on duty when two convicted assassins tried to escape from a high-security prison in Belgrade.

Sretko Kalinic and Zeljko Milovanovic used saws to cut through the bars of their cells, overpowered a guard, and jumped out a window into the prison yard on February 7, but were caught there by special police.

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said on February 8 that police were investigating whether the two had help from outside the prison.

Kalinic is serving a 30-year sentence for his role in the assassination of Serbia’s Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic in 2003, and has also been sentenced for other killings.

Milanovic was sentenced to 40 years in Croatia for killing a prominent journalist there, and is also being tried in Serbia for other crimes.
