Just days before the key Florida primary, the two leading candidates for the Republican nomination for U.S. president have clashed over immigration.

In a debate on January 26 in the Florida city of Jacksonville, former speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich sought to portray former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as the candidate most opposed to new immigration to America.

Romney said he was outraged over the description, saying his father was born in Mexico.

It was the final Republican debate before the January 31 Florida primary, in which the winner will claim 50 delegates in the race for the nomination to oppose President Barack Obama in November’s election.

Gingrich won last week’s primary in South Carolina, while Romney was victorious in the earlier New Hampshire primary.
