Ethiopia says two Germans, two Hungarians, and an Austrian were killed by gunmen in the north of the country, while two Germans and two Ethiopians were also kidnapped.

Government spokesman Bereket Simon said an Italian and a Hungarian were also wounded in the attack in Afar region.

Ethiopian authorities said the attackers had been trained and armed by Eritrea, an accusation denied by the Asmara government.

Eritrea gained independence from Ethiopia in 1993 but the two neighbors soon became embroiled in border disputes.
