Authorities in Afghanistan have instructed female television presenters to stop appearing on screen without a headscarf and to avoid heavy makeup.

In a letter distributed to media in Afghanistan, the Information and Culture Ministry said it had received complaints that female presenters were not observing Islamic and cultural ethics.

More than two dozen television stations have appeared in the decade since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan that toppled the hard-line Islamic Taliban regime.

While Afghan women have gained back basic rights in education, voting, and work since 2001, analysts say their plight remains severe and their future is uncertain as Afghan and U.S. officials seek to negotiate a settlement with the Taliban.
